Credentials:Jay's maritime heritage begins with his father, Commander J. Alex Michaud. (Shown here at left surveying damaged PT boat, Mindoro, Philippine Islands c.1945) "The Commander", as he was affectionately known, was the Commandant of the Philippine Sea Frontier, Motor Torpedo Boats at the end of World War II. During the War, as Fleet Engineering Officer, he was responsible for the combat readiness of over 250 PT boats. Even as a young boy, Jay was encouraged to learn about vessel design, construction, operation and maintenance under the watchful eye of his Dad. Jay's love of the sea and especially boats, their operation, construction and handling characteristics, continue to fascinate him. As early as his sophomore year at Saint John's Prep School, Jay won first prize at the school's annual Science Fair with a project that examined the characteristics of various vessel hull shapes. The project compared horsepower requirements at various speeds for displacement, semi-displacement and planning hulls, he even constructed a test tank to demonstrate his evaluations. Jay's background includes over thirty years of commercial fishing, off the coast of New England. Susan is the daughter of a commercial fisherman, she has operated her own commercial fishing vessels since high school, and continues to do so to this day.
